At the time, we were having a hard time connecting with our neighbors, most of whom were folks combating with systemic injustices, addiction issues, and generational poverty. We attempted to be friendly and smart -inviting him over giving plates of cookies to him -but the interactions were compelled and our neighbor kept his distance. I knew I wanted to do it all up: possibly pie, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole. We were smack dab in the midst of a terribly cold, Midwestern winter, and we wanted something to boost our spirits.
